The Pershing County Mustangs came home from Las Vegas without a trophy but holding their heads high after a successful season.
They traveled to Vegas on Saturday for the NIAA 2A State Semifinal game against the Meadows. Pershing lost 48-13 to end the year.
“It was a difficult game for us. Meadows is an exceptional team and capitalized on our mistakes. We did not play our best game but that’s a testament to them applying pressure on us,” coach Mike Brooks said.
As always, there were some high points. Lovelock’s Travis Donaldson ran for a touchdown in the first play of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Noel Zaldivar had a long interception return for a touchdown. However, the Meadows cruised past Lovelock for the win. The score at the half was 35-7.
Meanwhile, Lincoln County thumped Yerington (44-13). Lincoln and the Meadows will compete for the state title on Monday, Nov. 21 at a site and time to be determined. Most of Lovelock’s roster will switch over to basketball or wrestling for the winter sports season.
The Mustangs end the year at 8-3, overall, and 6-1 in the 2A Northern League. Their only league loss was against Yerington.
“I want to thank all the fans for the season and those who traveled to Vegas for the game. Thanks to all our supporters and to Connie Gottschalk for the photos. And thanks to the kids for a great year. It was definitely memorable,” Brooks said.
