McDermitt’s Crutcher wins 1A shot put state title, Villalobos fifth in discus

McDermitt High School junior Cayla Crutcher was one the top girls throwers in the 1A all season with a number of victories during the spring.

That was no different this past weekend at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Reed High School in Sparks.

It wasn’t easy though, as Crutcher held off Owyhee’s Mattisen Jones to win the state title in the shot put.

Crutcher had a best throw of 32 feet, 6 inches to edge out Jones at 32-5.50.

Both throwers distanced themselves from the rest of the field, as Eureka’s Lylah Hooper was third at 29-8.75 and Green Valley Christian’s Samantha Charron (28-9) and Beatty’s Cristal Lopez (27-6.50) rounded out the top five.

On the opening day of the state meet, Crutcher finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 75-9.

Jones, from Owyhee, won the event with a throw of 92-6 to win by feet over Tonopah’s Lilah Swanson.

Crutcher’s two finishes, put McDermitt in 14th in the team standings with 13 points.

Eureka won the team title with 93 points and Wells was the runner-up with 86 points.

Sierra Lutheran (76), Virginia City (53) and Tonopah (49) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

McDermitt senior Enrique Villalobos was fifth in the discus in his final high school meet.

Villalobos had a throw of 107-4.

Dekel Regev of Adelson School won the vent by more than 24 feet with a toss of 142-8. Mineral County’s Ryan Jaramillo was second at 118-2, followed by Sage Ridge’s Carter Burns (111-5) and Green Valley Christian’s Judah Withey (111-2).

Spring Mountain won the 1A boys team championship with 132 points and Mineral County was second at 67.

Beatty (66), Eureka (62) and Sierra Lutheran (61) rounded out the top five.
