The Battle Mountain High School softball team was looking to book a trip to Las Vegas if they could get through the Northern 2A Regional Championships this past weekend in West Wendover.
The Lady Longhorns opened the tournament on Friday as the No. 3 seed and took on rival and No. 2 seed Pershing County.
The Mustangs, who won two of the three league games, knocked off the Lady Longhorns 7-4.
Battle Mountain bounced back later on Friday to eliminate West Wendover 11-6.
After Yerington beat Pershing County in the winner’s bracket game, Battle Mountain took on Pershing County on Saturday morning.
The winner would advance to Las Vegas and the state tournament and the loser would see its season end.
It didn’t go the way of the Lady Longhorns, as the Mustangs won 7-2.
“I can't give enough admiration and respect to these young ladies,” said BMHS coach Candi Hamilton. “I wish they had more games played toward the start of our season, but they definitely persevered through the games toward the end. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to advance to the state playoffs this year. However, making it two games passed their team goal, I'd say it was a successful season. I’m proud of their hard work this season. A huge shout out to my assistant coaches (Julia Ramirez and Dave Fuller), I couldn't have done it without both of them.”
