The Battle Mountain High School softball team concluded its regular season this past week with a three-game series in West Wendover.
The Lady Longhorns blanked the Wolverines in the opener on Thursday 10-0 and split a doubleheader on Friday, winning 14-13 and losing 12-11.
attle Mountain ended the regular season at 18- overall and 12-6 in the Northern 2A.
Battle Mountain 10, West Wendover 0
Despite winning by the mercy rule in five innings, Battle Mountain held at 1-0 advantage after an inning of play before scoring six times in the fourth inning to break the contest open.
The Lady Longhorns ended the game early with three more runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kiana Gonzalez was 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI and run scored. Fellow freshman Hailee Andersen added two hits and a run scored. Heidy Amezcua and Gailieah Benevidez had one hit a piece. Benevidez also scored two runs.
Jessa Spring and Shea Jones split time in the circle. Jones threw four innings and allowed just one hit.
The junior struck out five and walked three. Spring pitched an inning and walked two, while striking out one.
Battle Mountain 14, West Wendover 13
The first game of Friday’s doubleheader was a wild one, as Battle Mountain came back from a 13-8 deficit at the start of the sixth inning to score the final six runs and complete the comeback.
The Lady Longhorns struck first in the opening inning, but the Wolverines quickly countered with five runs in the first and three more in the second to grab an 8-1 advantage.
Battle Mountain got four of those runs back in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 8-5, only to see West Wendover add four runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead 12-5.
The slugfest continued, as Battle Mountain picked up three more runs in the fourth inning to get within four runs at 12-8. The Wolverines scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth but it was not enough.
The Lady Longhorns began their rally with two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 13-10. The comeback was complete, as Battle Mountain plated four runs in the seventh inning.
Thalia Gonzalez, Kiana Gonzalez, Kelcee Robey, Andersen and Spring each had two hits.
Lilliana Haney started for Battle Mountain and received a no-decision in 2.1 innings of work. The junior allowed 12 runs (eight earned) on six hits. She walked seven and struck out two. Jones threw the final 4.1 innings and collected the win; The junior gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits. She struck out four and walked three.
West Wendover 12, Battle Mountain 11
West Wendover had another big lead in the series finale, let it get away from them again but the Wolverines rallied in the seventh to win the game.
West Wendover scored four runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to lead 10-2, but that would waste away quickly.
Battle Mountain scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning and plated seven more in the sixth to lead 11-10.
However, the Wolverines rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and won in walk-off fashion.
Marena Fuller was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Thalia Gonzalez added two hits. Samantha Leffler, Haney, Amezcua, Asier Iturriaga, and Robey each had one hit.
Spring and Jones split the time in the circle. Jones allowed 10 runs but just two of those were earned. She walked four and struck out five. Jones allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. She had five strikeouts.
Battle Mountain is right back in West Wendover this weekend for the Northern 2A Regional Championships.
Battle Mountain takes on Pershing County at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. The day opens with Yerington against West Wendover at 10 a.m.
The two winners play at 4:45 p.m. on Friday and the losers at 2:30 p.m. An elimination game is et for 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the title game at 12:15 p.m.
The two teams advance to the state tournament in Las Vegas from May 19-21.
