Pershing County baseball hosted rival school Battle Mountain on Tuesday.
The Mustangs showed their fighting spirit but lost 4-3. The Longhorns scored a tie-breaking run late in the game and seized the win.
Saturday, the Mustangs headed to Battle Mountain to finish the series. They lost the first game 6-2 but kept the score close. They dropped the last game 17-2.
“We competed well on Tuesday and the first game on Saturday,” said Jared Jensen. “Battle Mountain is a top four team in our conference and we went toe-to-toe with them for 14 innings. We saw improvements in our overall game this week.”
On Tuesday (April 26), Pershing County’s Wyatt Diaz, Izayuh Mcglothin and Blake Burrows each got one hit.
Burrows singled in the first inning, resulting in one run.
Battle Mountain tied up the game at three in the top of the third. That’s where the score sat until the Longhorns drew a walk in the top of the sixth, scoring the winning run.
Diaz started the game for the Mustangs. He surrendered three runs on three hits over three innings, striking out seven and walking zero.
Aaron Kienbaum recorded the loss. He went four innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out two and walking one.
In Saturday’s opener, Diaz pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out eight.
Kienbaum, Fecht and Burrows each got one hit. Pershing County scored both runs in the fourth inning.
The final game of the series went south quickly. Battle Mountain scored nine runs in the first inning and another seven in the third. Kienbaum, Mcglothin, Burrows and Noel Zaldivar each got a hit for the Mustangs. Travis Donaldson and Fecht each scored one run. Donaldson, Burrows and Kienbaum handled the pitching.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t cap the week off with a positive, but we saw our team fight against a team we hope to beat in the future,” said Jensen.
On Tuesday, May 3, the Mustangs hosted Mineral County in a non-league matchup
On. Wednesday, May 4, they went back on the road against the Lowry JV. The results of these games were not available at press time.
On Friday, Pershing County hosts Truckee for the final game of the year. It begins at 2 p.m.
