The Battle Mountain High School baseball team erased a six-game losing streak with three wins against rival Pershing County this past week.
Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday, April 26, and came away with a 4-3 victory.
The series moved over to Battle Mountain this past Saturday and the Longhorns swept the doubleheader 6-2 and 17-2.
Battle Mountain improved to 12-9 overall and 8-6 in the Northern 2A.
Battle Mountain 4, Pershing County 3
Pershing County jumped out to a surprising 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the series opener in Lovelock on April 26. However, that proved to be all the scoring and offense for the Mustangs.
Battle Mountain got one run back in the second inning and tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the third inning.
The Longhorns plated the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to avoid the upset loss.
Freshman Jake Perrone helped himself out on the mound, with a team-high three hits.
He also threw a complete game to earn the win. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits. He struck out 14 and walked one.
Jr. Vasquez, Liam Bundrock, Marcos Jimenez, Anthony Del Rio and Javier Tovar each had one hit.
Battle Mountain 6, Pershing County 2
Battle Mountain retuned to its home field this past Saturday for the first time since April 2. The Longhorns got off to a quick start with two runs apiece in the first and third innings to lead 4-0.
Pershing County put a bit of a scare in the contest with two runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, the Longhorns pulled away with single tuns in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Del Rio earned the win on the mound in the complete-game effort. The senior struck out 15 and walked two. He allowed two runs on four hits.
Vasquez and Terrance Fetterly each had two hits and the duo combined for five RBI. Sage Holte, Wiatt Kelley, Jimenez and Del Rio had one hit apiece.
Battle Mountain 17, Pershing County 2
The series finale lasted just three innings as part of the NIAA 15-run mercy rule.
Battle Mountain plated nine runs in the first inning and ended the game in the third with seven more to finish off the sweep.
Jimenez and Del Rio collected three hits apiece and Tovar had a pair of hits. Vasquez, Bundrock, Perrone and Asher Bundrock had one hit apiece.
Jimenez earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs (none earned) on four hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Battle Mountain closes out the regular season this week in West Wendover.
The series starts on Thursday at 4 p.m. and concludes with a doubleheader on Friday at 10 a.m.
The Northern 2A Regional Championships will be in West Wendover on May 13-14.
Yerington has clinched the No. 1 seed at 15-0 and West Wendover (11-4) and North Tahoe (10-5) are second and third, respectively.
Battle Mountain (8-6) sits in fourth and Incline (69) is fifth. The top four teams advance to the regional championships.
