Sapien takes home 40-yard dash title at Reed Rotary Invitational

The Lowry High School track and field team traveled to Sparks this past weekend for one of the top meets in northern Nevada, in the Reed Rotary Invitational at Sparks High School.

Buckaroos senior Giovani Sapien won the 40-yard dash, as the only runner to break five second at 4.99. 

The 40-yard dash is not an event at the regional or state meets but is ran at Reed. 

McQueen's Samuel Duran and Spanish Springs' CJ Stinson were second and third with times of 5.01.

Sapien placed fifth in the 100-meter dash at 11.52, after running a personal best 11.41 in the preliminaries. Reno's Niko Amari won the race at 11.07, as the field of eight was seperated by .69 seconds. 

In addition, he placed sixth in the high jump at 5-10.

Fellow senior Gunner Bradley set a personal best in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-0 to finish second. 

Stinson from Spanish Springs won with a mark of 6-2.  

Tyler Morrison, also a senior, placed third in the 800 meters with a personal best run of 2:08.95. Yerington's Kutovem Stevens, who is headed to the University of Oregon, won the race at 2:04.87. 

In addition, Morrison placed 15th in the 3,300 meters with a time of 11:37.85 for a personal best.

Iysis Arriola finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-3.75 for a personal best and Kaid Sanchez was 10th in the pole vault at 10-0. 

Junior Tyson Terry placed 14th in the discus with a toss of 108-1 and was 17th in the shot put at 38-7.25.    

Braden Hammargren set a personal best in the 100-meter dash to finish 27th at 12.17 and Robert Lopez was 32nd at 12.30 for a personal best for him.

Ivan Lara set a personal best in the 3,200 meters at 11:11.06 to place 13th and the junior was 28th in the 1,600 meters at 5:21.88.

Eduardo Martinez-Calderon set a personal best in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:45.59 to place 20th and Jeremiah Grasmick was 33rd in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 60.22.

The 4x100 relay of Sapien, Hammargren, Lopez and Arriola were fifth in a time of 47.08.

Reed won the team title with 174 points and McQueen was seocnd at 136. Carson (124), Spanish Springs (112) and Reno (110) rounded out the top five.

Lowry was ninth with 72 points and the second-highest finishing 3A behind Fernley, who was sixth,  

In the frosh/sophomore division, sophomore Jesse Jeronimo won the shot put with a personal best throw of 46-10 and he was second in the discus with a toss of 113-8. 

Fellow sophomore Nomar Aguirre won the discus with a personal-best throw of 124-7 and was second in the shot put (44-4.75, with a personal best.

Corbin Berezay was 19th in the triple jump with a mark of 28-6.50 and 30th in the long jump (14-9).

Lowry was eighth in the team standings with 72 points. Spanish Springs was the winner with 176 points and Reed was second at 133,

On the girls side, Emily Backus collected a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 15-7.

Spring Creek's Payge Walz won with leap of 16-5.75. 

Backus was third in the 40-meter dash with a time of 5.60. South Tahoe's Noose Higgins won at 5.59 and McQueen's Kaylee Wu was second, also at 5.60. 

The senior added an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash at 13.14.

Hannah Whitted placed second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-2, while teammate McKenzi Petersen was ninth at 4-8.

Churchill County's McCartney McAlexander won with a jump of 5-4.

Elizabeth Aguilar set a personal best time on the 100-meter dash at 13.01 to place sixth and Mia Hernandez was 11th in the pole vault with a mark of 8-0. 

Sydnee Pettis set a personal best in the 100-meter dash to finish 11th in a time of 13,34 and the junior was 22nd in the long jump at 13-0.25.

Freshman Caryn Sanchez was 11th in the discus with a toss of 78-11 and 32nd in the shot put at 23-1.75. 

Senior Saree Millikan set a personal best in the shot put at 26-7.75 to place 19th and she was 20th in the discus at 74-3. 

Her best throw of the season so far. Ellanora Petersen was 40th in the 100-meter dash at 14.41.

The 4x100 relay of Backs, Ellanora Petersen, Pettis and Aguilar were second with a time of 52.25.    

Lowry was 11th in the team standings with 72 points.

Galena claimed the team title with 208 points, beating out Spring Creek with 158. Reno (133), Bishop Manogue (122) and Reed (117) completed the top five.

Lowry travels to Battle Mountain on Friday.
