Throw together 11 high school track teams. Add some shot puts, discuses, hurdles and starting blocks. Don’t forget a cold and windy day.

It adds up to the opening track and field meet of the year – the Spring Creek League Meet. Nine of Pershing County’s 11 athletes represented Lovelock on this past Saturday in Elko County.

Spring Creek (3A) hosted two other 3A schools – Elko and Lowry. They also greeted busloads of athletes from Battle Mountain and Pershing (2A) and Carlin, Eureka, Jackpot, McDermitt, Owyhee and Wells (1A).

Yasmin Acosta, Kylee Fuller, Rylee Renfroe and Grace Kalsam bring their soccer skills to the track. Matt and Cassidie Fuller coach both sports.

Eudosia Mendoza played JV basketball last winter. She’s considering trying out for soccer in the fall.

“It’s nice having them out here for track and competing. They are a great group of ladies,” said Matt Fuller. He and Cassidie Fuller team up as middle school teachers, coaches and parents. Their daughter Kylee graduates this spring.

Fuller, Diego Gonzalez, Brayden Wagner and Mariano Gomez begin their final season of high school sports.

Kicking specialist Gonzalez amazed the football crowd last fall and also plays basketball. His teammate, Wagner, recently helped manage the girl’s basketball team.

What’s new?

The Fullers encourage the athletes to challenge themselves. This season, the seniors lead the way. Diego Gonzalez will throw the discus for the first time. Kylee Fuller will try out the hurdles.

It’s all new to the team’s five freshmen. Due to Covid, they haven’t had track since sixth grade. Kalsam, Mendoza, Luis Sanchez, Danny Jimenez and Efrain Gonzalez are reportedly jumping right into their events.

At Spring Creek, Kalsam perfected her long jump and 200-meter-dash. Mendoza competed in the 100 and 400-meter dashes.

Sanchez runs the 100 and 400-meter dashes. Jimenez and Efrain Gonzalez compete in the long jump.

Rylee Renfroe, a sophomore, competes in the 100-meter dash and 100 hurdles. She’s also part of the relay team.

Results from Spring Creek were not available at press time but the coaches are excited about their athletic team. They bring strengths from almost every sport PCHS offers.

What’s next?

On Saturday, Pershing County travels to Wooster Track and Field Stadium to compete in the Mark Smith “Smitty” Track and Field Classic.

They close out the month at Reed High School in the Rotary Invitational on March 25-26.
