This past Friday was a hit-fest for the Pershing County High School softball team. They traveled to Virginia City and won a non-league doubleheader against the Muckers 19-6 and 19-2.
The Mustangs jumped out with six runs in the first inning of the opener. In the second game they had a big second inning with seven runs. Through both games, the Mustangs made fewer errors (2) than the Muckers (10) and outhit them by a mile (37-9).
“Every single girl on the team got to bat and every single one hit the ball,” said coach Jordan McKinney. “It was amazing to watch. Gabi (Gabriella Denaldi), a foreign exchange student from Brazil, who has never played softball before, hit the ball.”
Denaldi joins the team as a senior outfielder. Her fellow seniors include Bela Rosas, Kassandra Swindlehurst and Sidonie Cassoret.
Juniors Marya Burke, Lupita Lopez, Kaylen Halverson, Andrea Canchola and Marina Corcuera kept the hits coming.
“Marya had a really good hit. Mady got a few nice hits and Kassandra had some solid hits as well,” said McKinney.
Sophomores Taylor Garland, Anna Happy, Kaylah Hanley, Mady Grenz, KayLee Poffenroth, Morgan Swindlehurst, Miya Gallagher and Yasmine Mckinney continued the trend.
So did freshmen Raegan Burrows and Aaliyah Allen.
“The girls had some mental mistakes on defense in the first game but did exactly as we asked of them – recovered and didn’t make the same mistake twice,” adds McKinney.
On Monday, March 14, Pershing County hosted Incline for the first game of a triple header. Results were not available at press time.
On Saturday, March 19, the Mustangs go on the road for the last two games of the series against Incline. On Tuesday, March 22, they travel to Silver Stage for the opener of a three-game series.
Pershing County hosts the Nighthawks on Saturday, Mar. 26, for the final two games of the triple header.
Coach McKinney, Drew Wanner and the athletes hope for a hefty turnout.
The games are at 10 a.m. and noon.
