Lowry swimmers open season in Fernley

The Lowry High School swim team began its 2022 spring season in Fernley on Saturday, March 5, with duals against Damonte Ranch and Sage Ridge.

The Buckaroos knocked off Sage Ridge, with the boys winning 39-24 and the girls at 36-29. 

Damonte Ranch beat the Lowry boys 76-36 and the Lowry girls 163-25.

“They performed very well for our first meet,” said LHS coach McKenzie Rupp.  “Many of the swimmers swam best times and we had five swimmers qualify for regionals.

For the Buckaroo boys against Sage Ridge, Matthew Lizanetz led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.54 seconds. Tanner Hatch was second with a time of 33.34 and Ashton Perry (36.23) was third.

Hatch won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:30.42 and Lizanetz was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:02.02. In addition, perry was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:48.25

Against Damonte Ranch, Lizanetz’s time in the 50-yard freestyle was good enough to win. Hatch and Perry were third and fourth in the event, with Damonte Ranch’s Matthew Eckhart placing second at 31.17. 

Lizanetz also won the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 1:02.02, with the Mustangs’ Ethan Daniels second at 1:05.92. Perry was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and Hatch was third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:30.42.

On the girls side against Sage Ridge, Zoey Thies picked up wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yards freestyle.

 She stopped the watch at 3:47.93 in the individual medley and 1:30.07 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Tea Bengoa won the 100-yard backstroke at 1:27.67 and Evie Morgan was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:58.01) and the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:40.89.

Against Damonte Ranch, Morgan placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard breaststroke, Bengoa placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke and Thies was third in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Lowry was in Carson City this past Saturday to swim against Wooster and travel to Truckee on Saturday, March 26.
