Battle Mountain splits with Pershing County, Virginia City

The Battle Mountain baseball team split two games at the Pershing County Tournament in Lovelock this past weekend.

Battle Mountain defeated Pershing County 15-2 on Thursday and lost 6-4 to Virginia City on Friday. The remainder of the games set for the weekend were canceled due to weather.

In the win over Pershing County, Battle Mountain scored five runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth to lead 9-0. The Mustangs scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and the Longhorns added five more runs in the seventh inning.

Anthony Del Rio and Terrance Fetterly each had two hits for the Longhorns. Josiah Simms and Marcos Martinez had one hit apiece. In addition, Del Rio and Fetterly each drove in four runs.

Marcos Jimenez, Anthony Silva and Del Rio split time on the mound. Jimenez struck out nine, Silva eight and Del Rio three. The trio combined for 20 strikes in 26 batters faced.



Virginia City 6, Battle Mountain 4

Virginia City plated two runs in the top of the first inning and added four more in the third inning and did not trail. Battle Mountain cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning with three runs and single run in the sixth inning but got no closer to the Muckers.

Jr Vazquez, Jimenez and Del Rio had two hits apiece and Hunter Anderson, Fetterly and Martinez each had one hit. Fetterly had three RBI with his three-run home run in the fourth inning. Vazquez’s both hits were doubles.

Vazquez, Eric Piedra and Silva pitched for the Longhorns. Vazquez had nine strikeouts and Silva seven.

Battle Mountain hosts Silver Stage in a single game on March 18 and the

 Nighthawks in a doubleheader on March 19.
