In May, 2019, at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas, Presley Burrows won a state track and field championship for PCHS.
She placed first in the triple jump and second in the high jump and 200-meters. She was a freshman at the time. Now she’s a senior.
The pandemic erased her chance to compete at state her sophomore and junior years. For now, she’s recovering from injuries and looking forward to the prom, graduation and life after high school.
Matthew and Cassidie Fuller are back for another season as track coaches. The roster and schedule were not available at press time. Last year all 11 team members medaled at the NIAA Northern 2A Regionals.
The regionals took place at Eleanor Lemaire Junior High School in Battle Mountain on Saturday, May 22, 2021.
The athletes bundled up in warm clothing between events as the wind blew and the temperature plummeted. More than half of Pershing’s athletes were seniors competing for the last time in their high school careers.
The track and field team said goodbye to Dalton McNeff, Connie Kersnowski, Julia Steele, Cheyeanne Diaz, Victor Flores and Zeke Jackson.
This year’s crop of seniors is certain to include distance runner Kylee Fuller. As a junior, she won the 1600 and 3200-meter races at the regionals. Diego Gonzalez, competed in the 400-meter and 800-meter races. He also graduates this spring.
Other competitors included Kaylen Halverson and Rylee Renfroe. Halverson placed second in discus and fourth in shot put. Renfroe placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
“Our regional track meet was a good one,” said Julia Steele, now a Mustang alum. “Every person on our team would have won a spot at state.”
