Every summer, pre-K through eighth graders get a chance to compete against campers in their own age bracket.
Along the way, they learn the fundamentals of one of Lovelock’s favorite Mustang sports, basketball.
Lee Houston says it’s been about 20 years since he offered the first Future Mustangs basketball camp.
As the varsity girls coach, he has seen many of the campers graduate to high school basketball, including two of his daughters.
Houston coached Taryn and Makenna all four years.
This year, on June 7, 80 campers showed up at the high school gym.
They each got ice cream, a shirt and a basketball to take home.
Everything keeps getting more expensive but camp remains a bargain at $30 per camper, payable to the basketball program.
“I want to send out a big thank you to our current players. They did a great job working with the kids. The kids had a great time. They especially like the ice cream sandwiches,” Houston said.
