As the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals concluded over Memorial Day weekend in Winnemucca, Battle Mountain’s Desi Coombs took home the breakaway state title and is headed to Gillette, Wyo., for the National Finals from July 17-23.
Coombs came into the state finals in fourth place but a strong performance in Winnemucca moved her to the top spot. She won the opening go-around with a time of 2.92 seconds and followed with runs of 4.010 and 3.17 to claim the state crown.
She just missed out on a trip to the national finals with a fifth-place finish in barrel racing. Coombs knocked down barrels in the opening and short go-arounds.
Coombs did qualify for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca from June 30-July 7.
Coombs finished 16th in the final pole bending standings, which also qualified her for the Silver State International Rodeo. In addition, Coombs qualified for Silver State in team roping.
Gracie Lou Holman qualified for the national finals with her third-place finish in girls cutting. Holman was seventh entering the state finals but jumped to third with three strong runs in Winnemucca. She scored 143 points in the opening go-around to place second and she won the short go-around with 146 points.
Holman was eighth in the final breakaway roping standings and will be in Winnemucca for the Silver State International Rodeo.
Italy Jo Holman will be headed to Wyoming as well with a third-place finish in pole bending.
After knocking down a pole in the opening go-around, Holman bounced back to place first in the second g-around with a time of 20.560 and third in the short go-around at 21.132.
Holman finished 12th in barrel racing and qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca.
Jolena Ayers qualified for the national finals on the strength of her fourth-place finish goat tying.
Ayers had three quick times of 10.760, 9.91 and 9.24 in Winnemucca to keep her in the running for the national berth.
Ayers qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in pole bending after placing 15th.
Amelia Lancaster qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping and pole bending.
At the junior high level, Logan Lancaster and partner Pete Mori qualified for the national finals in team roping in Perry, Georgia from June 19-25. The duo finished second in the final standings after Winnemucca. Lancaster qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in boys breakaway roping.
Eli Lancaster will be at the national finals after placing third in tie-down roping. He was second at the state finals in the opening go-around at 52.270 and he won the second go-around with a time of 22.260 and was third in the short go-around.
Eli Lancaster will also compete in team roping with partner Marinna Mori after they placed third in the final standings.
Lancaster and Quil Filippini qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in ribbon roping. Lancaster also qualified in chute dogging.
Jorja Mashburn and partner Lane Byrd qualified for the national finals with their fourth-place finish in ribbon roping.
Landry Meiman and Mashburn qualified to be in Winnemucca for pole bending and gat tying. Mashburn qualified for the Silver State international Rodeo in breakaway roping and barrel racing as well. Meiman will be in Winnemucca for barrel racing
