The Humboldt County Rodeo Club took home a couple state championships, as the club hosted the Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca from May 26-30 at the Winnemucca Event Center.
Emma Garijo came in to the state finals leading the season-long pole bending points standings and came away from the weekend as the state champion in the event.
Garijo won the first performance and the short go on her way to the title. Garijo had an average time of 66.866 seconds in her three runs.
That qualified her for the national finals in Gillette, Wyo., from July 17-23.
Garijo entered state in third place in barrel racing and improved to second after the state finals to qualify for the national finals as well.
She had runs of 15.838 and 15.950 in her last two performances. She won the short go-around to cement her spot in Wyoming.
Garijo came up just short of the national finals in breakaway roping, finishing sixth in the final standings.
Her best run of the weekend was in the short go-around where she finished second in a time of 2.73. That finish qualified her for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca from June 30-July 7. In addition, Garijo qualified for Silver State in team roping.
Garijo finished fifth in the all-around standings.
Billy DeLong earned all-around cowboy honors for the year and was the state champion in boys cutting. DeLong won all three performances of cutting at the state finals with 147, 146 and 147 points, respectively.
DeLong is headed to Wyoming in two more events for the national finals. He finished second in the saddle bronc standings and nearly gave eventual champion Eyer Morrison of Wells a scare.
DeLong was the only rider to have scores for all three performances at 58, 55 and 64.
DeLong also finished second in steer wrestling, behind Elko’s LJ Albisu. DeLong finished fourth in the first performance with a time of 20.160 and was fourth in the short go-around at 15.410.
In addition, DeLong was 12th in tie-down roping at will be in Winnemucca for the Silver State International Rodeo in that event, as well as team roping.
Coming into the state finals, Ashley Rookstool was outside the top four in girls cutting, but a strong state final is sending her to Wyoming. Rookstool kicked off her weekend with a third-place finish in the first performance with 142.5 points.
She won the second performance with 146 points and was second in the short go-around with 145.5 points. She jumped from sixth to second to qualify for the national finals.
Cooper Hill qualified for the national finals in boys cutting with his fourth-place finish.
Hill had performances of 135, 143 and 140 points, respectively to remain in fourth. Hill qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in tie-down roping.
Natalie Mori qualified for the national finals in Wyoming, following a second-place finish in reined cow horse.
Mori had a second-place finish in the short go-around with 289 points. Mori qualified for the Silver State International rodeo in barrel racing, breakaway roping and girls cutting.
Lexi Garijo qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping.
Cooper Hill qualified for the Silver Sate International Rodeo in tie-down roping.
