Three Pershing County wrestlers represented Lovelock at the Walter Marietta Vaquero Classic in Fernley this past weekend. Devin Moura (132), Justin Carruth (126) and Wyatt Hughes (152) competed in the two-day tournament.
Graduating senior Devin Moura went 4-2 and placed fourth in the 132-pound weight class.
He started out by pinning Eureka’s Timmy Schweble at 3:35 and Moura lost the quarterfinal match to Sergio Vela of Spanish Springs by pin.
Next, Moura headed to the consolation rounds, winning by fall over Hunter Busch of Fernley. Moura won by decision over James Spealman of Battle Mountain (Dec 7-6).
Moura won the consolation semifinals by decision over Lucas Prinz of Churchill County (Dec 12-10). That landed Moura in the third-place match where he met up with Vela again. Vela won by fall and Moura placed fourth.
The two freshmen wrestlers, Carruth and Hughes, also performed well.
“Justin Carruth had many successes and earned his first career victory,” said Mike Brooks. “Wyatt Hughes had a good tournament, winning multiple matches on day two in the hard luck tournament.”
