Lady Mustangs basketball win two of three during the week

The Pershing County Lady Mustangs are nearing the finish line, basketball-wise. They played three games this past week, one on the road and two at home.

On Tuesday the Mustangs overwhelmed Coral Academy 52-14 in the PCHS gym. Thursday the Mustangs lost to the number one team in the 2A, the Incline Highlanders 41-12.

Finally, they traveled to Tahoe City, Calif., dunking the North Tahoe Lakers 44-34.

The Mustangs are sitting in a good spot for the playoffs - 14-6 overall.

“We look forward to playing everyone in our league a second time this week,” said Lee Houston. “The second time we play teams is important because the second game is the tiebreaker for seeding purposes for the zone tournament.”

Mustangs crush

Coral Academy

“It was a good game to get everyone a ton of playing time,” said Houston, referring to Tuesday night’s home game against Coral Academy (2-7).

By the end of the night Presley Burrows, Bela Rosas, Raegan Burrows, Kylee Fuller and Kairi Watson each scored a three-pointer.

Presley Burrows led the scoring with 20 points, followed by Watson with nine. Raegan Burrows and Kylee Fuller each added seven. Anna Happy scored two.

“This was a good team win against a league opponent. Coral is getting better but they aren’t there yet,” said Houston.

Incline slams the Mustangs

On Thursday evening the Mustangs hosted the undefeated Incline Highlanders (11-0).

The home crowd was lighter than when Battle Mountain visited but just as enthusiastic, spurred on the Pershing County Spirit Squad and Winter Guard.

Incline had the height advantage. Brook Gutheil (#2) and Eiley Tippins (#20) each stand at six-foot-two. Point guard Elisabeth Stranzl (#3) ran the offense for the Highlanders. The Mustangs struggled to get good shots.

“We played scared and made Incline better than they are,” said Houston. “At times we played very good defense on them. Holding them to 41 points is good.”

Pershing County edges out North Tahoe

“This was one of those games where we didn’t play our best but were able to grind out the win. North Tahoe (6-5) is a much improved team that is dangerous in our league,” said Houston.

Presley Burrows led the scoring with 21 points. Rosas added ten. Raegan Burrows contributed six.

JV girls pull out win against Lakers

The JV girls overcame a ten-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Lakers.

“It was an exciting game. Both teams played hard. I’m proud of the ladies for sticking together and believing in themselves,” said Coach Damien McKinney.

Pershing’s JV roster includes Eudosia Mendoza-Madrid, Ayren Sam, Mady Grenz, Kaylah Happy, Anna Happy, Yasmine McKinney, Kyria Angel and Marina Corcuera Baque’s.

Upcoming games

The Mustangs play at Silver Stage on Friday night and host Yerington on Saturday. Pershing beat the Nighthawks (61-14) and Yerington (44-38 OT) earlier this month.
