1926-2021
Arthur Joseph Souza, 95, of McDermitt, NV passed away on December 30, 2021 in Renown Hospital from complications of Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
Souza, at the time of his demise, was a resident of the Northern Nevada Veterans’ Home in Sparks, NV
Surviving members of his family include his wife of 57 years, Dorothea (Brown), sons David (Susan) and Douglas (Gladys) as well as grandchildren, Katherine Souza, Isabel Souza, Peter Souza, Mary Charlotte Souza, Osman Souza, Ewan Souza, Matthew Ford and Riley Ford, numerous nieces and nephews as well as Goddaughter Phoebe Johnson of Fremont, CA and Godson Timothy Sousa of New Bedford, MA.
A.J. attended Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, MA after serving in the Korean War where he was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1959 followed by his Master’s Degree in 1961.
He taught school in Massachusetts for many years before accepting the Counseling position in McDermitt in 1975. He retired from education in 1991.
Arthur was the second son born to Manuel and Juliet (Rodriguez) Sousa of New Bedford, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Clement and younger brothers, Anibal and Manuel.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 19 2022 (A.J.’s 96 birthday) followed by interment in the Family burial plot in New Bedford, MA at a later date.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the McDermitt Library where A.J. spent many hours reading the newspapers, drinking coffee and visiting with the librarians and other patrons.
