The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up its first two league wins this past weekend as it went out on the road toward western Nevada.
Battle Mountain was in Lovelock on Friday night and squeaked out a 52-50 victory over its rival.
The Longhorns continued the road trip on Saturday in Reno against Coral Academy. Battle Mountain overcame a 10-point deficit in the first quarter to come back and win 59-45.
Trailing 17-7 after eight minutes of play, the Longhorns cut the deficit to 33-25 at halftime. Marcos Jimenez and Aydan Samuelson knocked down back-to-back baskets to start the second quarter and bring Battle Mountain within six points at 17-11. The Coral Academy lead was 12-point late in the first half when Battle Mountain closed out the second quarter on a 6-2 run.
A late run by Battle Mountain, which included baskets from Dennis Wahl and Terrance Fetterly gave Battle Mountain a 42-38 lead. The Longhorns pulled away from there to improve to 4-7 on the season and 2-2 in the Northern 2A.
Battle Mountain is back home on Friday to host Silver Stage at 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns are back on their home floor on Saturday afternoon to play Yerington at 3:30 p.m.
