Four PCHS wrestlers competed in the Sparks Railroader Tournament this past weekend along with over a dozen other teams.

Devin Moura (132 pounds), Wyatt Hughes (152), Justin Carruth (126) and Luciano Gonzalez (182) represented the Mustangs.

Moura scored 15 points for Pershing. He dropped a close bout against a Galena wrestler but persevered. Moura won the fifth-place match against Lowry’s Gage Kindler by fall in 62 seconds.

Hughes scored four team points. A first-round loss to a Fernley wrestler sent Hughes to the consolation rounds where he defeated Reed’s Kyle Pratap.

Coach Mike Brooks says Hughes is catching on to the sport quickly for a beginning wrestler.

The coach adds that Gonzalez “has improved miles in just the past few weeks.” Hughes, Gonzalez and Carruth faced competitors from Douglas, Reno, Fallon and Fernley.

“The kids continue to show improvement. I was happy with the way they competed and enjoyed themselves,” said Brooks.

This weekend the boys compete in the Kiwanis Invitational in Spring Creek.

It takes place at Spring Creek High School on Friday and Saturday.
