The Pershing County boys basketball team has five wins under their belt but has yet to score a league win.
They’ll have an opportunity to change that on Friday against Battle Mountain (0-2).
The Longhorns will also be fighting for their first league victory so expect intensity.
As of press time, Lovelock is hosting with the JV girls starting at 3 p.m. The varsity boys play at 7:30.
On Friday the Yerington Lions walloped Pershing County 59-24 at YHS.
“The kids played hard but inexperience killed them,” said JJ Meyers, filling in for Jesse Canchola after the first half.
The only cure for inexperience is more games and the Mustangs look forward to over a dozen before the season ends.
On Saturday the Mustangs hosted the Silver Stage Nighthawks.
“The varsity game was a tough loss,” said Meyers. “They played really well together for three quarters. In the fourth they started getting on each other and it snowballed from there.”
Silver Stage was battling for their first win of the season after a string of losses, most recently to CASR 48-43 the day before they came to Lovelock.
Pershing County fought for a win to secure a playoff berth. The result was one of the fiercer competitions the PCHS gym has seen.
The Nighthawks grabbed the lead in the final moments of the game, after trailing by centimeters throughout the second half. The final score was 43-40.
The teams meet again in Silver Springs on Friday, Jan. 28, and the Mustangs will try to even the score.
eyers singled out Aaron Kienbaum (22), Travis Donaldson (32) and Marshall Happy (40).
“Aaron and Travis are starting to see the court better and set teammates up to score,” he said. “Marshall Happy is going to be a big part of the program going forward. He just needs more game experience.”
JV boys knock Silver Stage
The JV boys had better luck against the visitors from Silver Springs. They beat the Nighthawks 48-11.
Denzel Zaldivar, Money Mike Reitz, Luis Sanchez and Efraim Aceves led the scoring with nine points each.
“We’re playing well right now but we have two big games ahead of us,” said Meyers, referring to the upcoming Battle Mountain and West Wendover games, both hosted by Pershing County at least tentatively.
The Mustangs play Battle Mountain on Friday. They face West Wendover on Saturday. Both are league games.
