Lowry’s Hunter places second at Sparks Invitational

While part of the Lowry High School wrestling team was in Idaho for the Rollie Lane Invitational, another group was in Sparks at the Brickhouse for the Sparks Invitational.

The Buckaroos; David Hunter earned a runner-up finish at 138 pounds and Jorge Ochoa (113) and Billy DeLong (138) placed fourth. David Walker notched a fifth-place finish at 220 pounds and Gage Kinder (132) and Tayden Primeuax placed sixth at 145 pounds.

Spanish Springs won the team championship with 221.50 points and Douglas was second at 214.5. Fernley (157.5), Churchill County (154) and Reed (152) rounded out the top five. Lowry was eight with 92.5 points.

After a first-round bye, Hunter pinned Douglas’ Kai Blumenthal in the first period to reach the semifinals. Hunter found himself in a battle against Yerington’s Kevin Hernandez, with Hunter collecting an 8-6 decision. 

Hunter was knocked off in the finale against Churchill County’s Isiah Diaz.

Ochoa picked up wins at 113 pounds over Spanish Springs’ Ella Parker and Tonopah’s Montana Strozzi by pins in the first period.

DeLong knocked off Yerington’s Mason Alarcon in the third period. DeLong lost to Diaz from Churchill County, who eventually won the weight class. 

DeLong bounced back to win his next three matches by pin in the first period. DeLong lost his third-place match to Fernley’s Braden Garrett.

Walker fell is his first-round match to Fernley’s Nathan Glass, but Walker came back to pin Douglas; Xavier Hamilton and Tonopah’s Charles Finn. Walker lost his consolation semifinal bout but ended the day beating Reed’s Kevin Palmer.

Kinder lost his first match of the day, a 3-1 decision to Galena’s Logan Obert, but won his next four matches in the consolation round, including a 9-5 win over Spanish Springs’ David Chavez and a 11-0 win over Spanish Springs Sergio Vela.

Following an opening-round bye, Primeuax pinned Dayton’ Jay Parsons and North Valleys’ Taylor Stealman to reach the semifinals. However, Primeuax lost his final three matches to place sixth.

Logan Ricci, Ryan Utterback, Easton Ham, Javier Gonzalez, Joshua Burgo and Logan Jonas all scored points for the Buckaroos.

Lowry travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational.
