After getting an unexpected break in action due to weather and having the Sierra Nevada Classic canceled, a portion of the Lowry High School wrestling team was in Nampa, Idaho, this past weekend for the Rollie Lane Invitational.
The Rollie Lane is one of the top wrestling tournaments in the Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Idaho area.
Coda Nichols, wrestling at 98 pounds, turned in the best performance for the Buckaroos. Nichols usually wrestles at 106 pounds in Nevada, but Idaho has the smaller 98-pound class.
Nichols advanced to the quarterfinals, opening with a 25-second pin over Farrell Burman of Wasatch in the first-round of action.
Nichols followed that by pinning Bode Alexander of Couer D’Alene in the first period.
Nichols lost to Post Falls’ Rider Seguine in the quarterfinals, but bounced back to pin Seth Mikalson of Mountain View in the consolation fourth round. Nichols’ tournament ended with a 10-4 loss to Saxton Scott on Bonneville.
Angel Huerta advanced to the consolation fourth round at 120 pounds. Huerta opened with an 18-2, technical fall win over Aiden Bonner of Crook County.
Huerta dropped a close 5-3 decision in the second round to Kellen Kolka of Meridian, but fought back to pin Post Falls’ Keaton Corbin in the second period.
Huerta earned a pin in 54 seconds in the consolation third round over Ricky Aaron of LaPine, before dropping his next match.
Wade Mori picked up six team points at 132 pounds for the Buckaroos.
Mori dropped his first match of the weekend, but came back to pin Ashton Allen of Blackfoot and Tayeen Genatone of Post Falls.
Mori saw his tournament end in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Luke Fentress (182) and Hunter Smith (195) collected wins in the opening round and Brenton Baker (126) and Jesse Hawkins (145) also earned points for the Buckaroos.
Flathead won the team championship with 231 points, followed by Meridian (206) and Couer D’Alene (152). Crook County (148) and Post Falls (129) rounded out the top five.
McQueen was the highest finishing Nevada school in 24th and Lowry was 45th with 38.5 points.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational.
