Pershing County High School varsity girls basketball head coach Lee Houston had a name for Friday night’s game against Yerington.
He called the road game “a tale of two halves.’
In the first half, the Mustangs abounded with energy on the floor and from the bench – more than they’ve shown all season. At halftime, they were up 26-7. It looked bleak for the Lions. But not so fast.
“We had a rough third quarter and let them back in the game,” said the coach. The Lions scored 19 points to Lovelock’s one point.
“We were also dealing with foul trouble all night. We ended up going into overtime and pulled out the win (44-38).”
Houston and Jason Allen agree that their players learned a lesson.
“We need to play four quarters of basketball,” said Houston. “We’re proud of how the girls were able to overcome adversity and come out with the win.”
Presley Burrows led the scoring against Yerington with 10 points. Kaydance Happy had nine. Taylor Garland and Bela Rosas added eight and seven points respectively.
Pershing County’s JV girls also pulled off a win by going into overtime.
“Both teams played hard and it was a fun game to be a part of,” said Damien McKinney, the JV girl’s coach. “There was a whole lot of energy and excitement in the gym. I was glad to see our girls fight to get the win.”
Yasmine McKinney and Anna Happy led the scoring with 12 points each.
Saturday, the Mustangs hosted Silver Stage. It was Pershing’s first home game in over two years. Lovelock pressured Stage and came out on top (61-14). Silver Stage doesn’t have a JV girl’s basketball program so the JV girls sat this one out.
“We used this as a practice game to work on the little things we need to improve,” said Houston.
Happy and Burrows both achieved double digits against the Nighthawks. Happy scored 19 points. Burrows added fifteen. Aaliyah Allen added eight more.
With the wins Pershing stands at 10-4, overall, and 3-0 in the 2A North.
“We turn our attention to Battle Mountain. It’s always a big game when we play. I know our girls will be up for the challenge,” said Houston.
This Friday Pershing hosts the Longhorns. The JV girls start at 3 p.m. The varsity girls play at 6 p.m.
On Saturday Lovelock greets West Wendover. The JV girls lead off at 11 a.m.
