After playing just five games in the month of January, the Lowry High School girls basketball team is going to get its fair share and much more as the season hits the month of February.
The Lady Bucks will play eight games between Feb. 1-12 to close out the regular season, including five games in six days from Feb. 7-12.
A handful of those games were moved due to Covid from other schools and Lowry playing in preseason tournaments.
Lowry ran its winning streak to six games and improved to 14-3 overall, 4-0 in the Northern 3A East and 8-0 in the Northern 3A wins after two victories last week.
Lowry traveled to Truckee this past Thursday to take on the reigning 3A state champion.
The Wolverines are the last Northern 3A team to beat the Lady Bucks, winning in the 2020 regional semifinals in Fallon.
Truckee went on to beat Fernley for the 3A state championship in 2020.
In the fourth attempt to play the contest this season, Lowry won 74-37 inside an empty gym at the home of the California school.
No fans were allowed to attend due to Covid restrictions in California.
Lowry grabbed a double-digit lead at 16-6 in the opening quarter, as sophomore Savannah Stoker scored half of those points.
Stoker went on to finish the night with 32 points, which tied her career-high 32, that she scored against Silverado earlier in the season.
The Lady Bucks led 24-13 midway through the first half and closed the second quarter on an 11-2 run off of baskets by Hannah Whitted, Jovi Kuskie and Stoker.
Lowry pushed the advantage to 25 points at 49-24, as seniors Emily Backus and McKenzi Petersen got in the scoring attack.
Stoker also added 10 more points to finish with 30 in three quarters and equal Truckee’s total after 24 minutes of play.
Lowry led 62-30 going into the fourth quarter and scored eight of the first 10 points to create a running clock.
Stoker was the lone Lady Buckaroo in double figures, as Petersen, Backus and Whitted each scored eight points.
Kuskie added five points, Mia Hernandez and Alexis Olsen four each, Kailey Franklin three and Kaytee Delaney two.
Lowry finishes sweep of Churchill County
Lowry started the month of January with a win over Churchill County in Fallon and ended January with a 54-23 victory in Winnemucca this past Friday to complete the season sweep of the Greenwave.
It is the first regular season sweep for Lowry over Churchill County since the 2014-15 season.
The Lady Bucks raced out to a 15-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest and did not look back.
Lowry extended the lead to 19-3 after eight minutes of play and were up 32-9 at the break, leading 32-6 at one time.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the Lady Bucks maintained a 30-point advantage for the final 16 minutes on their way to the easy victory.
Stoker outscored the Greenwave by herself with 25 points and Backus joined her in double figures with 10.
Petersen had six points, Whitted and Olsen four each, Kuskie three and Hernandez two.
Lowry took on Fernley on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and results were not available at press time.
The Lady Bucks hit the road and play Dayton on Friday at 6 p.m. and Fernley on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Lowry is back home to play Elko on Monday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m.
The game was originally set for Jan. 22, but was postponed due to Covid issues within the Elko program.
Lowry travels to Sparks on Tuesday, Feb. 8, for a 6 p.m. tip off and return home on Wednesday, Feb. 9, to play South Tahoe at 6 p.m.
The regular season ends with a home game against Spring Creek on Feb. 11, and a road trip to Elko on Feb. 12.
The Northern 3A Regional Championships will take place Feb. 17-19 at the Winnemucca Event Center and Lowry High School.
In addition, late last week the NIAA changed the playoff format for the regional tournament.
Originally, the regional was going to be six teams with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes.
The tournament is now an eight-team format, with the top four teams from the Northern 3A West and top four from the Northern 3A East.
