Pershing County girls basketball team picks up two Northern 2A wins

The Pershing County High School girls basketball team picked up two wins this week, scoring over 100 points between the two games. On Friday, the Mustangs held Silver Stage to 13 points 53-136. Yerington did not fare much better (53-26) the next night in the PCHS gym.

On Tuesday, the girls traveled to Battle Mountain. Results were not available at press time.

“Over the years Silver Stage has been a hard place to play,” said Lee Houston, the girls varsity coach. “The girls did a great job digging deep to find energy and not look past them to Yerington the next day.”

“Kaydance Happy controlled the paint, scoring 17 points. Kylee Fuller lit up from outside, hitting three big 3-pointers and scoring 11 points,” he added.

On Saturday, the Mustangs brought their game home.

The spirit squad and winter guard added to the atmosphere in the PCHS gym. The home crowd was as enthusiastic as ever, following along with the cheers. A contingent of Yerington fans cheered for the purple.

Three players scored in the double figures with another girl not far behind. Senior point guard Bela Rosas scored a season high 17 points. Presley Burrows had 11. Raegan Burrows threw in ten more. Kaydance Happy added eight.

Presley Burrows went after the rebounds all night. The coach said sometimes her sister Raegan, a freshman, “seems to be everywhere on the court.”

On Thursday, the Mustangs host North Tahoe for Pershing County’s senior night. When they competed in Tahoe City last month the Mustangs were not at their best according to Houston. Pershing County pulled off the win but Tahoe got in some good licks.

The final score was 44-34.

“North Tahoe is a much-improved team that is dangerous in our league,” said Houston. “The second time we play teams is important because the second game is the tiebreaker for seeding purposes for the zone tournament.”

The coaches and players hope for a big Lovelock turnout to say goodbye to Presley Burrows, Bela Rosas, Kylee Fuller and Aledda Sam.
