This year the NIAA decided to extend the wrestling season out one extra week.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team used that additional week to start their league matches as well get one last chance to wrestle some non-league matches.
Wrestling in the unfamiliar surroundings of their home gym, the boys in green showed they are getting primed for a deep post season run.
The day started with the Longhorns matching up with teams from Wells and Eureka in the first of the league matches for the season.
Battle Mountain won both duals as they dispatched Wells 60-18 and then defeated Eureka by a 60-6 score.
“We spend the whole regular season on the road going to large tournaments trying to prepare for February,” said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala. “Today we got an early start to the post season and took advantage of it. The only points we gave up were due to forfeits in weights that we didn’t have a wrestler.”
Registering league wins for the Longhorns were Cruz Jimenez, Sean Scherer, Liam Bundrock, James Spealman, Andy Wall, Scott Wall, Asher Bundrock, Brice Domagala, Dalton Shake and Cody Holley who all went 2-0 in league matches.
Following the league portion of the day the team mixed it up with wrestlers from Elko and Spring Creek.
“It was great to get one last chance to compete against the local 3A schools before we all separate for the post seasons,” added the coach.”
Adding to their impressive start to the day, the Longhorns racked up several more victories. Jimenez, Scherer, Liam Bundrock, Scott Wall and Asher Bundrock all added three more wins to their daily total, while Spealman and Domagala added two more wins and Shake won his only other match for the day.
The Longhorns will wrestle at home again on Friday as they will host matches against Coral Academy, Excel Christian, Lovelock and Yerington. Wrestling starts at 1 p.m.
Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Saturday, Feb. 12, for the Northern 2A Regional Championships at Pershing County High School.
The top four placers in each weight class advance to the state championships.
The NIAA 1A/2A State Championships will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19, in Las Vegas at The Meadows School.
The state championships will be a one-day event starting at 9 a.m.
