Lady Bulldogs drop first game of the season to Mustangs

After opening the season with seven straight victories, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team lost its first game of the season this past Thursday night in Oregon.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Jordan Valley, Ore., and lost 62-40 to the Mustangs.

Jordan Valley stayed undefeated at 5-0 and have won all their games by more than 20 points.

McDermitt opened the night with a quick layup from Reign Crutcher, but Jordan Valley scored the next six points and did not trail again.

A second basket by Crutcher closed the gap to a bucket, when Jordan Valley answered with a back-to-back 3-pointers and a layup to lead 14-4.

The Lady Bulldogs closed the gap to 14-10 after layups from Vina Tom and Nicolette Northup but trailed 15-10 after eight minutes of action.

Jordan Valley scored seven of the first nine points of the second quarter to go in front 25-12, when Alexis Scott ended the run with a put back basket.

The Mustangs picked up a couple layups in the final minute of the half to lead 29-16 at the break.

Late in the third quarter, Jordan Valley used an 15-1 run to build a 52-25 advantage. Crutcher stopped the run with a free throw with :04 left in the third quarter.

McDermitt outscored Jordan Valley 16-10 in the fourth quarter but was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Scott had a team-high 11 points to go with four rebounds and Tom added eight points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Sadie Hinkey and Northrup netted four points apiece and Cierra Smart, Brianna Sherburn, Kiarra Crutcher and Loni Tobey had two points each.
