On Monday. Dec. 12, 2022, at approximately 11:33a.m., Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a vehicle crash on Interstate 80, near state mile marker 182 (county mile marker 18 in Humboldt County).
This location is approximately 4 miles east of Winnemucca.
Preliminary investigation determined that a white Chevrolet pick-up truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 in the left travel lane.
The vehicle was traveling at a rate of speed too fast for the adverse road conditions and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle drove off the left side of the roadway, into the center median and overturned.
Unfortunately, the driver, Michael Ward (age 69) Nashville, KS, was unrestrained in the vehicle. He was transported from the scene for medical treatment.
He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The passenger was transported to the hospital with suspected minor injuries.
The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.).
