Battle Mountain wrestlers compete at Wiley Dobbs Invitational in Twin Falls

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was back in Idaho this past weekend for the Wiley Dobbs Invitational in Twin Falls. The tournament was broken into a varsity, JV and girls tournament.

In the varsity tournament, Battle Mountain finished 24th in the team standings with 22 points.

Highland won the tournament with 212 points, while Minico was a close second at 207. 

Elko, the reigning 3A state champion, was third with 184 points.

Cruz Jimenez placed fifth at 113 pounds for the Longhorns. After a first-round bye, Jimenez lost to Middleton’s Christian Segali. 

Jimenez had two byes in the consolation round and in the fourth-round beast Buhl’s Zan Parker 12-0. His tournament continued with a 7-5 win over Steven Brooks of Nampa. 

Jimenez took on Segali again in the consolation round and lost the Idaho wrestler. 

Jimenez earned fifth place with a pin over Mountain View’s Ethan Schmidt.

Sean Scherer (120) picked up a win at 120 pounds, a pin over Capital’s AhmadRomal Amini. He reached the consolation fourth round. 

Liam Bundrock (126), Asher Bundrock (160) and Scott Wall (170) also wrestled in the varsity tournament. 



Three BMHS 

grapplers wrestle in girls tournament

Battle Mountain had three wrestlers compete in the girls tournament. Jennifer Galvan reached the fifth round of the consolation bracket. 

She lost in the championship second round to Gracie Castillo of Garden Valley.

Galvan bounced back in the consolation fourth round to beat Elko’s Avianna Robles 6-2. In the fifth round, Galvan lost a heartbreaker 5-4 in the ultimate tiebreaker.

Dani Madalena picked up a win at 114 pounds with a pin over Boise’s Milla Yager and Kaylee Freeman also wrestled at 120 pounds.



Spealman places 

second at 132 pounds in JV tournament

James Spealman earned a second-place finish in the 132A bracket in the JV tournament. 

Spealman pinned his first three opponents and made his way into the final with a 12-2 win over Zander Grow of Capital. Coda Smith of Soda Springs beat Spealman in the final.

Ben George finished fourth at 285 points, earning a 61-second pin in the championship second round over Kuna’s Ashtyn Lowther. 

George lost in the championship quarterfinals, but came back with three wins in the consolation bracket, including a 4-1 overtime victory over Jaxen Burdue in the consolation semifinals.

Ari Kyllonen (138), Wyatt Madalena (145), Andy Wall (152) and Cody Holley (285) picked up points for the Longhorns.

Battle Mountain was 18th in the team standings with 68 points.

Canyon Ridge won the tournament with 197 points and Kuna was a close second at 195.5.

Battle Mountain traveled to Ely on Wednesday for the White Pine Invitational and results were not available at press time. 

The Longhorns close out the calendar year in Reno on Dec. 28-29 for the Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Event Center.
