Battle Mountain High School’s Sean Scherer claimed the 113-pound title at the Cody Louk Invitational this past weekend at the Winnemucca Event Center.
Scherer won four of his five matches by pin on his way to the championship.
He opened with a first-period pin over South Tahoe’s Jacob DeLeon and followed that with a second-period pin against Jaedin Low of Damonte Ranch.
Scherer advanced to the semifinals on Friday night with an 8-4 decision over Spanish Springs’ Justin Ruiz. Scherer closed out the tournament on Saturday by pinning Reno’s Nic McGee and Lowry’s Coda Nichols.
As a team, the Longhorns placed 14th with 54 points, with Scherrer scoring 32 of those points. Spanish Springs won the team title with 342.5 points and Lowry, the host, was second at 222.5. Fernley (202.5), Carson 195) and Douglas (170.5) rounded out the top five.
James Spealman reached the consolation fifth round at 132 pounds, after dropping his first match to Wells’ Jake Glascock.
Spealman bounced back to beat Hug’s LaDainian Hernandez 10-3 and pinning Tonopah’s Mitchell Miller. Spealman’s tournament ended with a 6-4 loss to Galena’s Logan Obert.

Wall was eliminated with a loss to Lowry’s Luke Fentress.
After a first-round bye, George lost to Lowry’s David Teixeira, only to come back in the consolation bracket to beat Wells Ethan Eaton by pin.
