When it comes to high school wrestling, experience is crucial especially for a young team. Four Lovelock wrestlers competed at the McQueen JV tournament in Reno last Saturday.

Jeff Elerick, Wyatt Hughes, Tavis Lawrence and Logan Hunt each gained time on the mat.

About 15 schools sent wrestlers to McQueen High School.

Jeff Elerick at 138 pounds placed first in his weight range and brought home a medal. Wyatt Hughes was leading the 157s but got pinned by a McQueen opponent.

Coach Mike Brooks says Tavis Lawrence (138) and Logan Hunt (285) also continue to improve.

This Saturday the Mustangs host the Lovelock tournament at the high school starting at 9 a.m. Every year, both gyms spill over with wrestlers, parents and coaches.

The Lovelock community pulls together to volunteer at the all-day event. Otherwise, it would not be possible.

“We are expecting a large number of participants with a couple of schools from California coming in,” said Brooks.
