The McDermitt High School boys basketball team was back on the road this past weekend for the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.
The Bulldogs were able to play three of its four games, with the last being canceled due to winter conditions in the area.
McDermitt opened with host Virginia City and lost 77-16 to the Muckers. In the second game on Saturday, McDermitt lost 66-45. In the only contest on Saturday, McDermitt lost 44-22 to Pahranagat Valley.
“We are pretty much a brand-new team this year and have been playing with five kids the first couple weeks of the year,” said MHS coach Jack Smith. “We have a couple kids that were on the team from last year. I felt we played are best games of the year against Coleville and Pahranagat Valley. With just five kids right now, we get tired in the final quarter of games.”
McDermitt opened the season in Reno from Dec. 1-3 at the Winter Classic at North Valleys High School. On Dec. 1, McDermitt lost 50-29 to the North Valleys JV. The Panthers jumped out to a 29-12 lead at halftime.
Junior Jeremiah Horn had a team-high 14 points to go with eight rebounds. Fellow junior Kess Hinkey added eight points. Eight rebounds and three steals.
Josh Northrup netted four points, Eli Northrup two and AJ Farmer one. Eli Northrup contributed seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Against the Douglas JV on Dec. 2, the Tigers won 64-14 after building a 39-10 advantage at halftime.
Eli Northrup had seven points, Josh Northrup five and Horn two. Horns added seven rebounds.
McDermitt closed out the tournament on Dec. 3, against the Incline JV. The Highlanders led 24-7 at halftime.
Horn had a team-high 14 points, while Josh Northrup added four points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists. Farmer also had four points to go with six rebounds. Eli Northrup scored three points.
McDermitt was scheduled to travel to Jordan Valley, Ore., on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Bulldogs travel to Susanville, Calif., this weekend for the Super 8 Classic.
McDermitt makes its home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 20, against Pyramid Lake at 6 p.m.
“We are in another tough tournament in Susanville,” Smith said. “Hopefully, we can make a little run when league play starts. We are just looking to get better every time we play.”
