The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up two wins in five games this past weekend at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne.
The Longhorns played a pair of games last Thursday to start the season, losing to Churchill County 60-28 in the opening game. Later that night, Battle Mountain took on host Mineral County and lost 41-34. The Serpents lost in the 1A state semifinals last year to Green Valley Christian.
Battle Mountain picked up its first win of the season on Friday, beating Spring Mountain 52-30. In its second game on Friday, Battle Mountain lost to Bishop Union, Calif., 68-48.
To close out the tournament on Saturday, Battle Mountain beat Virginia City 50-37.
Boden Machado had a team-high 14 points and Braden Wahrenburg (13) and Blake Stuart (10) joined him in double figures. Zayne Hall added seven points, Jr Vazquez four and Luis Guizar two.
Battle Mountain is back on the road this weekend in Virginia City for the Comstock Classic. The Longhorns are scheduled to play Pahranagat Valley on Friday at 4 p.m. and Mineral County at 6:40 p.m. Battle Mountain plays Coleville, Calif. on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. and Virginia City at 3:40 p.m.
Those will be the final games of the calendar year, as the Longhorns travel to Wells on Jan. 2 and Eureka on Jan. 3.
