McDermitt girls go undefeated at WREC Classic

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team made it a perfect weekend for girls basketball in Humboldt County with four impressive wins at the WREC Classic in Carlin this past weekend. 

The Lady Bulldogs won every game by 23 points or more to start the season at 4-0. The young squad includes six freshman, three sophomores and a junior.



McDermitt 50,

Round Mountain 27

The opening game of the tournament on Thursday was the closest game of the weekend for McDermitt, who beat Round Mountain 50-27.

The Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 21-11 lead after eight minutes of play and slowly pulled away from the Knights with a 25-7 run in the second and third quarters, including a 19-4 spurt in the third quarter to take a 46-18 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs had three players score in double figures with junior Nicolette Northrup pacing the squad with 15. 

Freshman Alexis Scott netted 11 points and sophomore Vina Tom added 10.

Reign Crutcher and Kiarra Crutcher each scored four points and Cierra Smart, Sadie Hinkey and Loni Tobey each had two points. 

Kiarra Crutcher added six rebounds and three steals and Northup grabbed four rebounds.



McDermitt 66, 

Carlin 20

In its second game on Thursday, McDermitt took on Carlin and ran away with a 66-20 win over its Eastern 1A foe. 

Reign Crutcher, a freshman, nearly outscored the Railroaders by herself with 22 points. She added six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Scott joined her in double figures with 10 points and Smart and Tom contributed eight points apiece. 

Kiarra Crutcher and Northrup scored six points apiece and Hinkey had two.

Scott added eight rebounds and two steals and Kiarra Crutcher had six steals and four rebounds.



McDermitt 64,

Lund 9

In its lone game on Friday afternoon, McDermitt routed Lund 64-9. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-1 lead and the Mustangs did not make their first field goal until the 1:26 mark of the first quarter.

McDermitt held Lund scoreless in the second quarter to lead 34-5 at halftime. 

The lead grew to 43-5, when Lund knocked down a basket with 3:29 left in the third quarter.

The Mustangs went scoreless once again, as the Lady Bulldogs scored the final 15 points of the night.

Reign Crutcher and Smart outscored Lund by themselves with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Kiarra Crutcher and Tom added seven points apiece, Brianna Sherburn, Hinkey and Northrup six each and Scott five.

Kiarra Crutcher grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists, Scott and Tom each had three steals and Northrup had four rebounds.

McDermitt 56, Tonopah 12

McDermitt closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 56-12 win over Tonopah. Scott led the way with 12 points, while Riata Palmer joined her in double figures with 10 points. 

Smart added nine points, Tom eight, Reign Crutcher six, Hinkey five, Kiara Crutcher four and Northrup two.

Scott collected six rebounds, with Reign Crutcher and Northup adding three rebounds apiece.

McDermitt will look to keep its early momentum rolling, as they travel to Virginia City this weekend for the Comstock Classic.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Jordan Valley, Ore., on Tuesday, Dec. 13, and host Pyramid Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 4:30 p.m.
