The Lowry High School wrestling steam started its season on a high note, winning four of its five duals at Churchill County in Fallon this past weekend.
The Buckaroos beat Fernley 48-30, Churchill County 64-12, Elko 78-6, Carson 54-30 and lost to Spanish Springs 48-36.
“We wrestled pretty good for the first time out,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “There were a lot of pins on the weekend and not a lot of the matches went all the way. We gave Spanish Springs a good battle but could not hang on at the end.”

Fernley won two of the first three matches, with the Buckaroos’ Chris Gildone pinning Brody Jones at 138 pounds in the first period.

The Greenwave closed the gap to 22-12 at 165 pounds, but that was their last win.
Harber, Fentress, Jonas, Kruz Gomez, Nichols and Ricci won by pin. Lange won his match by forfeit.

Elko, the defending the 3A champion, did not have its full team at the dual tournament and Lowry routed them 78-6.

The Senators earned wins in the next two matches to cut the deficit in half, but the Buckaroos got six points back ay 144 pounds, as Kinder won by forfeit. Magana followed with a pin in 20 seconds at 150 pounds and Fetty also won by pin to push the dual score 42-12.
Carson closed the gap to 42-24 with wins at 165 and 175 pounds but Lowry held on for the dual win, as Fentress won by pin in 57 seconds at 190 pounds and Lange won by forfeit at 215.
Spanish Springs 48, Lowry 30
Pins by Nichols at 113 pounds and Baker at 126 gave Lowry a 12-6 lead over the perennial Northern 5A power. The Cougars turned the tables on the Buckaroos, winning the next five matches by pin to go up 36-12.
Lowry closed the gap to 36-30 after Burgos (165), Harber (175) and Fentress (190) won by pin. However, Spanish Springs won two of the final three matches to win the dual.
“We were leading a couple matches and got caught and lost by pin,” Brooks. “That is a big shift in momentum and the points. Overall, we wrestled pretty good. There is still a lot to improve and get better at.”
The Lowry JV won three of its five duals on the day, beating Truckee, Elko and Churchill County. The Buckaroos lost to Carson and Spanish Springs.
Lowry is home this weekend and host South Tahoe in a dual on Thursday at the Winnemucca Event Center at 5 p.m. The Buckaroos host the Cody Louk Invitational this weekend, starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
