Lowry boys begin season with three losses in Elko

The Lowry High School boys basketball team took to the floor for the first time this season this past weekend in Elko under the direction of new coach Nate Green.

The Buckaroos dropped all three of its games at the Brent Stokes State Farm Classic, but Green left Elko still happy about what is ahead.

“We are going to be okay,” said the coach. “We made some little mistakes that hurt us but overall, we played pretty good against three good teams.”

Lowry 57

Lowry opened the season on Thursday night against Reed and the Raiders held on for a 59-57 win. The Buckaroos held a one-point lead, 15-14, after a quarter of play as Lance Brinegar knocked down to 3-pointers an Anthony Guzman hit a shot from long distance as well.

Lowry hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter, one each from Jordan Bills, Matthew Casalez, Jimenez and Justin Scott.

However, Reed used a 21-point third quarter to go in front 51-48.

Despite just two field goals in the fourth quarter, Reed held on for the two-point win.

Casalez paced Lowry with nine points, Bills added eight, Guzman and Jimenez had seven each, Brinegar, Garner and Scott six apiece and Dempsey Jenkins and Isaac Danner four each.

Reno 73,

Lowry took on another member of the Northern 5A on Friday and suffered a 73-39 loss to Reno.

The Huskies led 33-18 at halftime and scored the first 10points of the second half and did not look back. Reno stretched its lead to 63-34 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Hunter, Utah 69, Lowry 62

Lowry finished the weekend on Saturday morning with a 69-62 loss to Hunter from West Valley, City, Utah.

The Wolverines made four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of play, with the first two giving the Utah school an 8-4 advantage.

The Buckaroos took a 9-8 lead after a basket by Danner and a 3-pointer by Bills.

However, Hunter scored the final 10 points of the first quarter to go in front 18-9.

A pair of baskets by Guzman and a short jumper by Jenkins closed the gap to 21-16, when Hunter made a run to go back up 29-19, when Brinegar knocked down a 3-pointer to close the gap to 29-22. The Wolverines led 31-24 at halftime.

Hunter maintained it lead throughout the third quarter and led by as many as 10 points at 44-34, when Brinegar made a 3-pointer. Two free throws by Danner closed the gap to 48-44 at the start of the fourth quarter.

That was as close as the Buckaroos got, with the Wolverines opening up a 62-49 lead with three minutes to play.

However, Hunter had trouble with the Lowry pressure defense and that advantage quickly shrunk.

Brinegar completed a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer to make the score 62-58, but Hunter hit a 25-foot jumper the next time down the floor to push the lead back to seven points.

Lowry had three players in double figures, with Jenkins leading the way with 17 points and Brinegar and Casalez finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Danner added nine points, Guzman six, Bills five and Garner two.
