Lady Longhorns win three games in Serpent Classic

With a new look on the bench in Michael Speers, who replaced longtime coach Paul Tremayne, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team started its season with three wins at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne this past weekend.

 

Churchill County 55, BMHS 16

Battle Mountain opened the year with a perennial 3A power in Churchill County. The Greenwave collected a 55-16 win, as senior Aylea Ramos led the Lady Longhorns with five points.

Jolena Ayers, Christina Holley and Heidy Amezcua added two points each and Lilliana Haney had one point.



BMHS 54, 

Bishop Union 31

Later on, Thursday, Battle Mountain routed Bishop Union, Calif., 54-31 to pick up it first win. The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 25=6 lead in the first quarter and held the Broncos scoreless in the second quarter.

Haney had a team-high 11 points, with Holley adding eight points and eight rebounds. 

Ayers and Ramos each netted seven points, with Ramos adding three rebounds.

Shea Jones added six points, Thalia Gonzalez five and Lisette Haney and Lindsey Bleak had four each.



BMHS 26, 

Smith Valley 24

Battle Mountain extended its win streak to two games with a 26-24 win over Smith Valley on Friday. Holley collected nine points, Amezcua had six, Ayers and Ramos four each and Jones two.



Mineral County 56, BMHS 27

In its second game on Friday, Battle Mountain lost 56-27 to host Mineral County. 

The Serpents led 24-19 after the first quarter and held the Lady Longhorns to eight points in the final three quarters. Seven of those points were in the third quarter.

Ramos scored a team-high six points, Ayers and Holley five each, Bailey Elderkin four, Haney three and Jones and Gonzalez two each.



BMHS 40, 

Virginia City 17

Battle Mountain closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 40-17 win over Virginia City. The Lady Longhorns led 20-4 at halftime and were never threatened. 

Holley (14) and Ramos (12) led the Lady Longhorns and Jones added seven points. Ayers and Bleak had two points apiece.

Battle Mountain heads back out on the road this weekend to Virginia City for the Comstock Classic.
