Goodbye to the preseason jitters.
The Pershing County High School volleyball team participated in the 18th annual Yerington tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
The girls played half a dozen games, one after another.
“Being part of the 38 teams that comprise this awesome tournament, we played a lot of volleyball this weekend,” said Monica Halverson, the head varsity coach.
On Friday the Mustangs lost to Dayton (25-11, 25-13) Mammoth (25-14, 25-16) and Round Mountain (25-24, 25-20).
“We had some close games but had a lot of forced mistakes and not a lot of communication on the court,” Halverson said.
However, on Saturday, Pershing County won all three of their pool play matches. The Mustangs beat Virginia City (25-13, 25-16, 15-9), Carlin (25-15, 25-14) and Coleville (24-26, 25-14, 15-9).
“When we were off the court we helped ref and did some team bonding activities. I love participating in this tournament because of the level of play we get to have and watch. There are lots of 5A and 3A teams that we don’t crossover and play during the regular season,” Halverson said.
On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Mustangs hosted Oasis Academy for a non-league matchup.
Results were not available at press time.
This Friday, the Mustangs host Virginia City. On Friday, Sept.9, Pershing County begins league play at home versus Yerington. The JV leads off at 4 p.m., and the varsity follows at 5 p.m.
“I can feel the energy of a great season developing. Keep working hard, ladies. Success will come,” Halverson told the team.
