Pershing County opens preseason play with volleyball tournament

Say goodbye to the preseason glitches. Eight volleyball teams competed in a tournament at Pershing County High School last weekend.

Smith Valley, Wells and Mineral County (Hawthorne) came from the 1A.

Pershing County and Yerington JV represented the 2A and the 3A teams were Fernley, Dayton and Lowry.

“It was a nice mix of differently leveled teams,” said Monica Halverson, Pershing County’s head coach since 2019.

On Friday the Mustangs went 1-2 in pool play against Lowry, Yerington JV and Dayton.

Pershing County knocked off Yerington JV. Dayton went on to win the entire tournament.

“Coming from Dayton, this makes my heart proud because I love watching them play,” said Halverson. She was head volleyball coach for the Dust Devils before moving to Lovelock.

On Saturday, the top four teams competed in the black division. The rest played in the red division with the Mustangs as top seed. They won the red division against Wells in two games. The Lovelock girls made time to stop by the scrimmage to show support for the football team.

Pershing County has one more preseason tournament in Yerington this weekend, Aug. 26- Aug. 27.

“I look forward to this tournament because we see a lot of teams and compete against those that aren’t in our league. It helps set the tone for our season play,” said Halverson.

Pershing County hosts Oasis Academy on Tuesday, Aug. 30 and Virginia City on Friday, Sept. 2.

The JV leads off at 4 p.m., and the varsity follows at 5 p.m.
