The Lowry High School cross country team made its way to western Nevada this past Friday to open the season at the Douglas Class Races in Minden.
The racers are divided up into freshman, sophomore, junior and senior races at a distance of 2.55 miles.
A normal cross country race in high school is 3.1 miles.
Lowry’s Austin Formby competed in the junior race and finished 22nd with a time of 17 minutes, 40 seconds.
Damonte Ranch’s Jackson Elliott won the race in a time of 13:49 and Elko’s Braylon Baggett (14:35) placed second.
Damonte Ranch won the team title with 29 points, followed by Reno (38) and Douglas (53).
The Buckaroos’ Lennox Zebroski ran in the sophomore race and finished 25th at 21:49.
Fernley’s Kael Paz beat Spanish Springs’ Peyton Miller by a second (14:24-14:25) to win the race.
Galena was the only team to have enough runners for a team score in the sophomore division.
Cael Mattioli of Reno won the senior race with a time of 14:06 and Reed’s Gabriel Weaver was second at 14:21.
Reed beat Galena 27-28 to win the senior team championship.
On the girls side, Reno’s McKenna Parker won the freshman race (17:48), Bishop Manogue’s Amaya Aramini (16:00) the junior race, Galena’s Alyssa Bronander (16:46) led the seniors and Galena’s Elanor Raker won the sophomore race with a time of 15:53.
Lowry travels to Fernley on Thursday for the Roadhill Invitational.
