Lady Bucks finish second at Pershing County tournament

The Lowry High School volleyball team did not have far to travel, as it opened its 2022 season in Lovelock at the Pershing County tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Bucks were positioned in pool play with Pershing County, Dayton and the Yerington JV on Friday.

Lowry kicked off the year with a 25-15 and 25-19 win over the host Lady Mustangs.

Pershing County plays in the Northern 2A. Lowry stayed on the floor and took on Dayton in their next match.

In a Northern 3A East preview for later in the year, the Dust Devils picked up identical 25-22 wins to beat the Lady Bucks.

After an hour break, Lowry closed out pool play on Friday afternoon with a 25-14 and 25-7 win over the Yerington JV.

The 2-1 record left Lowry second in pool play and set up a match-up with Smith Valley in bracket play on Saturday morning.

The Bulldogs, a member of the Northern 1A West, won their pool by beating Fernley, Mineral County and Wells.

Smith Valley went 28-1 in 2021 and won the 1A state championship over Green Valley Christian. The Bulldogs’ only loss was to North Tahoe.

Lowry knocked off the defending 1A state champions 25-23 and 25-20, also avenging a loss to the Bulldogs a season ago.

Lowry made its way into the championship match with Dayton and knocked off the Dust Devils in the opening set.

However, Dayton came back to win the final two sets and the tournament title.

Lowry (3-2) will be back on the road this weekend for the Yerington tournament.

The Lady Bucks begin Northern 3A West crossover play on Aug. 31 at Truckee. Lowry makes its home debut on Saturday, Sept. 10, against Hug.
