Many factors have contributed to the Pershing County High Scholl softball team’s 11-game winning streak. For example, it’s hard to lose when you’ve got a ‘vacuum on third base.’

That’s how coach Jordan McKinney describes third baseman Kaylen Halverson, a junior.

Then, there’s the hitting. Pershing outhit visiting West Wendover by a mile this past weekend. The Wolverines showed steady improvement but Pershing won all three games (15-0, 22-13, 12-2).

Pershing County improved to 13-1-1 overall, and 9-0 in the 2A Northern league.

“The girls had a good weekend at the plate,” said McKinney. “They showed what great hitters they all can be.”

Aaliyah Allen and Taylor Garland led the hitting for the Mustangs in the opening game with two hits each. Kassandra Swindlehurst, Halverson, Miya Gallagher and Yasmine McKinney each got a hit.

On Saturday, Bela Rosas scored her first home run of the season.

“It was the first game of the doubleheader,” said Rosas. “It was very emotional and it was nice to have my team run out and congratulate me.”

Garland pitched Friday. She came back for a game and a half on Saturday. In the opener, she faced 12 batters, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out six.

“She gets better each game,” said McKinney.

Gallagher also got some innings at the mound.

“Miya kept her head and did exactly what we put her there to do,” said the coach.

On Tuesday, April 5, the Mustangs traveled to Tahoe City to play the North Tahoe Lakers (0-4). Results were not available at press time.

On Saturday, Lovelock hosts the Lakers for the last two games of the series.

 They’ll play at 10 a.m. and noon.

On Saturday, April. 19, the Mustangs host Yerington for the first of a 3-game series. Expect a close contest. The Lions are also undefeated (8-0, overall, and 6-0 in the 2A).
