Pershing County football team clears the stage

Last Friday night began with a disappointment but ended with a win for the Pershing County Mustangs football team. The varsity boys expected to host the Silver Stage Nighthawks but plans changed at the last minute.

Instead of a home game under the lights, the Mustangs played an afternoon game on the road in Silver Springs.

“We were happy with how our kids adjusted and took the news about our game being moved to Silver Stage High School. We’re grateful to Tom Donaldson and his crew for helping us get transportation on such short notice,” said head coach Mike Brooks.

Silver Stage appeared ready to roll with the home court advantage.

“They came out and completed a long touchdown pass to take the lead,” said the coach. “Our kids responded and landed a 56-6 victory.”

“Russell Stokes started his first game on the offensive line and had a good game. Blake Burrows and Seth Provstgarrd are improving each week. Diego Gonzalez continues to wow people with his kicks,” he added. “It was nice to have some players back on the field but tough, because not everyone could play.”

With the win, Pershing County improved to 2-1, overall, and 1-0 in the 2A Northern league. On Friday, Sept. 24, the Mustangs are back on the road against Yerington. JV plays at 4:30. Varsity follows at 7 p.m.

The home crowd has to wait until Friday, Oct. 1, for Pershing County football to play in Lovelock again. The Mustangs host North Tahoe on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.

The JV boys face Lowry at 4:30 p.m. Be prepared for last minute changes. Check the Mustangs' Facebook page for updates.
