Garijo, DeLong, Coombs win at White Pine High School rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action the weekend Sept. 10-12 in Ely at the White Pine High School rodeo. The Humboldt County and Battle Mountain rodeo clubs had a number of strong finishes.

Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo claimed the top spot in barrel racing with two strong finishes and average time of 35.203 seconds. Garijo won the first performance in a time of 17.602 and she was the runner-up in the second performance at 17.601.

She also won the pole bending average, sweeping first place in both performances for a time of 42.265. She won the first performance in a time of 21.157 and improved to 21.108 in the second. Garijo was third in the breakaway average at 6.46, which included a first-performance victory with a time of 2.90. 

Garijo and fellow Humboldt County rider Billy DeLong won the team roping average at 20.880. The duo was on top in the first performance at 10.300 and were third in the second performance at 10.580.

Meanwhile, DeLong swept both performances of steer wrestling to win the average at 25.250 seconds. DeLong stopped the clock at 11.000 in the first performance and 14.250. He was the only one in the event to have clean runs in both performances.

DeLong finished fifth in boys cutting with 130 points and he was fifth in tie-down roping at 33.490.

Humboldt County’s Lexi Garijo placed fourth in the breakaway average at 6.60, which included a fourth-place run in the second performance at 2.61. Garijo finished seventh in barrel racing at 36.420, and she was fifth in the second performance with a time of 18.401. Garijo and Fernley’s Kaden Florez were sixth in team roping.

In addition, Garijo was 11th in the pole bending average at 50.295. She was sixth in the first performance at 22.587, but knocked down a pole in the second run.   

Humboldt County’s Natalie Mori was 10th in the barrel racing average at 36.595 and she was seventh in the second performance in a time of 18.057.

Mori also placed 10th in the breakaway roping average. She missed her calf in the first performance but was sixth in the second performance at 3.13.

Kayleigh Marshall was 18th in breakaway roping and ninth in the rifle shoot.

Cooper Hill finished fourth in boys cutting with 131.5 points, 13th in rifle shoot, 11th in tie-down roping and 11th in trap shooting.  



Battle Mountain’s Coombs wins

Battle Mountain’s Desi Coombs took the top spot in the breakaway roping average at 5.540. She was fourth in the first performance at 3.080 and she tied for second in the second performance at 2.460.

Coombs was fourth in the barrel racing average at 36.028, which included a third-place finish in the first performance at 17.748 seconds. Coombs added a 12th-place finish in pole bending at 48.063.

Amelia Lancaster was the runner-up in barrel racing average at 35.879. She had a time of 18.041 in performance one and 17.838 in the second performance. Lancaster placed fifth in breakaway roping at 6.879, She had times of 3.83 and 3.040. Lancaster and Fallon’s Jarret Peek were fifth in team roping. The duo was second in the second performance with a time of 8.24.

Jolena Ayers placed third in pole bending with a time of 44.154. She was eighth in the goat tying average at 24.060, which included a third-place outing in the second performance in a time of 9.36.   

 

Junior high results

Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto won the girls breakaway roping with a time of 8.77. She also won the first performance in a time of 4.17. Barto was sixth in girls goat tying at 28.010 and 13th in pole bending. Barto and Maggie Van Norman were third in team roping. They won the first performance at 10.690 but missed their calf in the second performance.   

Huntley Byrd took home the top spot in the pole bending average at 43.789, which included a victory in the second performance in a time of 21.210. She was 19th in goat tying and fifth in ribbon roping. 

Taylor Hill was second in the barrel racing average with a time of 37.375 and she won the second performance at 18.255. Hill was also the runner-up in breakaway roping with a time of 19.330. Hill was 15th in girls goat tying and 21st in pole bending.

Matti DeLong was eighth in barrel racing, after placing as the runner-up in the first performance at 18.713. DeLong third in goat tying, ninth in breakaway roping, ninth in pole bending and fifth in ribbon roping. 

Louise DeLong was third in pole bending and Layne Byrd placed sixth in breakaway roping. In addition, Byrd was eighth in boys goat tying, and sixth in team roping.

Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman, Gracie Mashburn, Jorja Mashburn, Eli Lancaster and Logan Lancaster also had strong finishes.

Battle Mountain hosts the next round of the series on Sept. 24-26.
