Obituary: Howard Merton Davis Jr

Howard Merton Davis Jr, 99, went to be with the Lord on August 29, 2021, in Winnemucca, Nevada.

He was born on July 23, 1922, in Phoebus, Virginia to Howard Merton Davis and Bettie Cornelia (Sadler) Davis. 

Howard enlisted in the United States Army on May 12, 1941 and served in World War II. 

While in the Army he took a bookkeeping and accounting course at the United States Armed Forces Institute. 

He was stationed at the Bishop Airport and in Tonopah before he was sent overseas to England. 

Howard met Jo Maverne Koch when he was stationed at the Bishop Airport in the Service. 

The men would come to Bishop and Jo worked at a music store. One day, Howard went to see her and waited for all the service men to leave the store.

He told her he better put a ring on her finger. The two married on March 27, 1944. The two shared 77 years, lots of love and a wonderful family together.  

After the war, Howard worked with his father-in-law, who owned the Toggery – clothes store in Bishop, CA. 

Howard and Jo bought the Foster Freeze and added a burger addition. Then bought a gas station and added a car wash. 

Howard and Jo lived in Bishop, CA for years before moving to Winnemucca, NV in 1996 to be near their daughter and family. 

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Bishop, CA and the Zion Lutheran Church in Winnemucca, NV and he was a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed getting together with family. He loved the outdoors – especially metal detecting. He always wanted to be an architect and loved woodworking crafts. 

He made his daughter a schoolhouse, merchant store, church, and many more with his added details inside. These last few years he loved seeing his great grandkids and his great-great granddaughters. 

Howard is survived by his wife, Jo Maverne, His daughter, Linda (Glen) Wilson. Grandchildren, Kris (Louis) Kelly, Kevin Wilson, Kraig (Sandy) Wilson, Renee (Rob) Graves. Great-grandchildren, Shane (Chelsey) Kelly, Alicia (Dillon) Cadwell, Brian (Chaslynn) Kelly, Nick (Jess) Wilson, Samantha (Rob) Odle, Ryan Brickey, Zachary (Brittany) Graves and Lily Graves. 6 great-great granddaughters and 2 more twin great-great grandaughters due soon! Niece, Gwen (Russ) Krabbenhoft and their families (Minnesota). 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard, and Bettie. His sister, Mildred (Raby) Grantham and daughter Susan (Larry) Matthewson.
