After a nearly month of practice, the Lowry High School girls golf team hit the course to see other golfers for the first time, with two tournaments in Elko County last weekend.
The Northern 3A began its season on Tuesday, Sept. 7, in Spring Creek and with three freshmen in the line-up, the Lady Bucks won the tournament.
Lowry shot 434 to beat Douglas by two strokes. Douglas, a member of the Northern 5A in most sports, saw its girls golf team drop to the 3A under the latest NIAA realignment that last for two years.
Elko finished third at 441 and was followed by Truckee (447), Fernley (497) and Spring Creek (538).
Churchill County, Dayton and North Valleys did not have enough players for a team score.
Truckee’s Ryan Flynn was the low medalist with an impressive round of 74. Lowry sophomore Piper Nichols was second with a score of 99 and Elko’s Juliana Lozano-Jimenez (100) was third.
Lowry senior, Bailey Hayes was fourth overall and freshman Katie Cassinelli, playing in her first tournament for the Lady Bucks, carded a 104 to place fifth overall. Freshman Presley Hayes had the final kept score for Lowry at 129. Jordyn Medicine Cloud did not finish her round.

The Northern 3A made the short trip over the summit to Ruby View Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
The scores improved throughout, as Douglas picked up the win with a team total of 397. Lowry improved by strokes to finish second at 414.
Truckee climbed to third place at 417 and Elko (429) and Spring Creek (488) rounded out the top five. Fernley was sixth at 490 and Dayton (596) placed seventh.
Flynn dominated the field once again, shooting a 3-under par 69 to win medalist honors. Nichols was the runner-up for the second straight at day at 94 and Douglas’ Madison Frisby was third at 94. Nichols won the scorecard tie-breaker over Frisby.
Bailey Hayes tied for fifth with Douglas’ Mackenzie Willis at 96 and Cassinelli was seventh overall at 98. Presley Hayes finished with a 126 and Medicine Club carded a 145.
The Northern 3A does not hold a regional championship and the three state tournament slots are determined by the season-long point standings.
Lowry and Douglas lead the Northern 3A with 12 points and Truckee and Elko are tied for third with eight points apiece. Fernley and Spring Creek are tied for fifth with five points.
The NIAA 3A State Championships will take place in Mesquite on Oct. 18-19. The first 18 holes will be played at Oasis Canyon and the second 18 at The Palms Course.
Lowry hosted the Northern 3A on Monday and traveled to Fallon on Tuesday. The results of both tournaments were not available at press time.
