Nevada High School Rodeo Association starts new year

Even though the National High School Finals Rodeo ended at the end of July, a new season for the Nevada High School Rodeo Association got underway in Panaca in Lincoln County in the final weekend of August.

Billy DeLong and Cooper Hill led the Humboldt County Rodeo Club with a third and fourth-place finish in boys cutting. 

DeLong was second in the first performance and third in the second to score 137 points. Hill scored 61 points in both performances to finish with 122 points. Hill added a fifth-place finish in the rifle shoot.

DeLong added a second-place finish in steer wrestling with a combined time of 25.880. 

Even though he was third in each performance, his average time was good enough for the runner-up spot. DeLong was sixth in tie-down roping, with an average time of 47.420.

On the girls side, Emma Garijo was seventh in the barrel racing average in a time of 35.890. 

Garijo was outside the top 10 in the first performance at 19.004, but rallied to win the second performance at 16.886.

Garijo placed fourth in the pole bending average at 43.370. She was second in the second performance with a time of 21.321.

The winning time was 21.304. Garijo was sixth in breakaway roping with two solid performances of 3.34 seconds and 3.93.

Lexi Garijo placed ninth in breakaway roping, which included a third-place in the first performance eat 3.100. Garijo missed her calf in the second performance. She was 17th in pole bending with an average time of 54.649 and 18th in the barrel racing average at 20.948.

Garijo and team roping partner Kaden Florez from Fernley earned the runner-up spot with a time of 33.240.

Kayleigh Marshall was 15th in the breakaway roping average in a time of 25.440. 

Amelia Lancaster from the Battle Mountain Rodeo Club won the barrel racing average at 34.129, including a runner-up outing in the second performance with a time of 17.196.

Lancaster used two strong performances to finish fourth in breakaway roping at 7.070 and she was fifth in pole bending at 44.241. Lancaster and Las Vegas’ Ali Frehner were fifth in team roping. 

Italy Jo Holman won the pole bending average at 43.181. She also took home first place in the second performance of the event at 21.304. 

Holman placed fifth in girls cutting with 130 points and was 14th in barrel racing at 36.544.   

Jolena Ayers was third in the goat tying average at 21.030 and was seventh in pole bending with an average time 48.910 and she was 14th in breakaway roping.

Desi Coombs placed eighth in breakaway roping, 11th in the barrel racing average at 36.086 and 12th pole bending.

Gracie Lou Holman placed third in girls cutting, 10th in breakaway roping and was in the top 10 in team roping.

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association will be in Ely on Sept. 10-12.
