Lowry girls tie with Wooster in season opener

After a nearly a month of just practicing, the Lowry High School girls soccer team hit the field for the first time this season, when it hosted Wooster this past Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bucks held a two-goal lead on three separate occasions, but the Colts netted two goals in the final 10 minutes to tie the match at 4-4.

“We started out really well and the through balls were working well for us,” said LHS coach Cristina Cuevas. “We got a little too comfortable at times and that hurt us. But, for our first game, I will take the tie. The girls did a good job.”

Lowry jumped on the board in the eighth minute, as Alia Novi took a pass from Emily Backus and had nothing but an open for the shot and goal. The Lady Bucks increased the advantage to 2-0 in the 27th minute, when Backus connected on a shot from about 15 yards out.

Wooster quickly cut the deficit in half, a minute later, as Belinda Rico got through the Lowry defense and scored on a breakaway opportunity. Rico scored three of the Colts’ four goals.

Six minutes before halftime, the Lady Bucks increased the advantage back to two goals at 3-1, as Bryce Brinkerhoff put back a shot in the net after an initial Wooster save. Brinkerhoff also had an assistant on the day, as did Britain Backus and Kenzi Dowd-Smith.

The Colts further trimmed the Lady Bucks’ lead to 3-2 with a goal in the 63rd minute, only to see Lowry strike right back.

Elizabeth Aguilar curled in a shot from the right side of the field that landed in the left-front corner of the net in the 65th minute for a 4-2 lead.

Five minutes later, Wooster was back on the scoreboard to cut the deficit to 4-3 and continued to pressure the Lowry defense. At the start of extra time, the Colts tied the match at 4-4.

Lowry is scheduled to travel to Truckee on Friday for a 4:45 p.m. start and Sparks on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The games are subject to change site or be postponed due to Covid protocols or smoky conditions.

“We learned a lot today and will work on a few things and get ready to play, wherever it is,” Cuevas said.
