After taking just one player to the first tournament in the opening week of the season, the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team was fully assembled for its home tournament at Mountain View Golf Course this past Thursday.
Battle Mountain finished second in the tournament with a 526, while West Wendover took the top spot at 465.
White Pine and Wells also competed in the tournament, but did not have enough players for a team total. The Elko and Spring Creek JV were on hand as well, but their scores were separated from the 2A squads.
The Wolverines had three girls finish in the top four. Kayla Jones was the low medalist with a round of 90 and Sarah Childress was second at 115. Moriah Haney was fourth overall for West Wendover at 119. Wells’ Tiffany Higbee split the West Wendover golfers, placing third with a score of 116.
Alyssa Laughon led Battle Mountain with a fifth-place finish at 124. Kiana Gonzales shot 132 and Lisette Haney carded a 134. Jade Castellanos (136) and Vanessa Gillogley (140) rounded out the scores.
Battle Mountain coach Jayson Cutler noted that this was the first tournament for the girls on a number of teams.
“All the ladies played very well,” Cutler said. “It’s still early in the season and we will continue to make improvements. Hopefully by state, we can be in contention for the state 2A title.”
Battle Mountain was scheduled to travel to Round Mountain this week, but the tournament was canceled. The Lady Longhorns and the Northern 2A will be in Wells for a change of pace with a two-girl scramble format.
“We look forward to the different format and getting to partner with other players from different schools,” added the coach.
